Producers with small DVD replication needs now may have
same copy production as features
By Warner Sills
For the first time and exclusively in Chicago, a local company
offers the same kind of copy protection to non-theatrical producers
with short order needs that big studios use to prevent DVD piracy.
(Chicago Digital) collaborated with Macrovision’s RipGuard
copy protection to create RipGuard-MOD (ManufacturingOnDemand) to
protect recordable DVDs. “The piracy of independent producer
material has been rampant and unchecked up until this point,”
says Montague. “ We put the power back in the producer’s
hands. That’s what really makes this so exciting.” ...

Finally--affordable copy protection for any video content, even
if the per-job minimum is only three discs! In December 2006, Chicago

protecting the proverbial little guy. The technology protecting
the DVD of your favorite blockbuster has been applied to DVD-Rs
for small-scale productions like wedding and corporate training
videos... (more)

New Type of Copyright Protection Released
by jmet
RipGuard-MOD v2.4, Macrovision’s newest video content protection
technology, is the most widely adopted rip control technology in
the market today.
RipGuard-MOD defeats most copiers by neutralizing their tools of
choice and significantly raising the technical bar required for
completing a successful copy. When copiers encounter a RipGuard
protected title, they experience a frustration that rarely occurs
when they try to copy titles protected only with the Content Scrambling
System (CSS)... (more)

Macrovision Offering DRM for Indie DVDs
by Jackson West
Certainly one way for independent filmmakers to cash in on their
work as been to sell self-published DVDs. Nothing like a double-feature
of Strongbad and Ask a Ninja on a lazy Saturday afternoon, smug
in your knowledge that the profits went to the artists and not some
corporate distribution racket (as in the fictional scenario of Nat
Segaloff’s Steal This Disc below). But what independent DVD
production and distribution has lacked is a way to shackle their
customers with DRM — until now! (more)
